Lesson 01

    Marketing Strategy

How to Build a Digital Marketing Strategy for Your Business

You don't need to become a marketing expert. You just need to understand how the pieces work together.

If funnels, CTRs, CRMs, pixels, automations and attribution reports sometimes feel like an entirely different language, you're in the right place.

Let's take digital marketing apart, remove the jargon, and rebuild it in a way that actually makes sense.

    Person → page → email → data → customer. Marketing isn't a tool. It's a system.

    Let's Start

    Start here

First Things First: What Is a Digital Marketing Strategy, Really?

At its core, digital marketing is simply how you get the right person to discover your business, become interested in what you offer, take the next step, and eventually become a customer.

The tools can get complicated. The strategy doesn't have to.

Tap any stage to see what it means.

“If you understand these five stages, you already understand more about digital marketing strategy than you probably think.”

    The Marketing Dictionary

Marketing People Love Their Acronyms. Let's Translate Them.

Marketing conversations can sound much more complicated than they actually are. So throughout this learning hub, whenever we use marketing jargon, I'll translate it into normal-human language.

People visiting your website, landing page or offer.

Someone who has shown interest and given you a way to contact them.

When someone completes the action you wanted them to take.

The instruction telling someone what to do next: book, buy, download, register, etc.

A page designed around one specific goal or action.

The intentional journey someone follows from discovering you to becoming a customer.

Something useful you offer in exchange for someone's contact information.

The follow-up that keeps the conversation going and builds trust over time.

A system for organizing your leads, customers, conversations and opportunities.

A rule that makes something happen automatically when a specific condition or action occurs.

How much you spent to generate one lead.

How much it costs your business to acquire a customer.

The percentage of people who saw something and clicked it.

The percentage of people who completed the action you wanted.

How much revenue your advertising generated compared with what you spent on ads.

Tracking technology used by advertising platforms to understand certain actions visitors take and help measure or optimize campaigns.

The process of determining which marketing activity gets credit for a lead, conversion or sale.

Showing marketing or advertising to people who have already interacted with your business.

    Before you build anything

    Your Marketing Isn't for “Everyone”

Before you write an ad, build a funnel or create a lead magnet, you need to know who you're talking to.

And no, this doesn't mean inventing “Sarah, 37, drinks Starbucks and enjoys yoga.” 😅 The useful questions are much simpler:

    • What is this person trying to accomplish?

    • What problem are they experiencing right now?

    • What have they already tried?

    • What frustrates them?

    • What are they afraid of?

    • What would make them think, “OMG, this is exactly what I need”?

    • What might stop them from buying?

    • How do THEY describe their problem?

    Don't guess

Look at your real customers. Read sales conversations, emails, DMs, comments, reviews, support questions and discovery call notes. The best marketing language often comes directly from your customers.

Write your funnel for ONE clear person — not “everyone.”

    Your offer

Technology Can't Save a Confusing Offer

Before worrying about technology, you should be able to answer four questions. When these four click into place, everything you build afterwards gets easier.

    Audience

    Who, specifically, is this for?

    Problem

What are they struggling with today?

    Offer

What are you actually giving them?

    Next Action

What should they do right now?

    Quick exercise

    Finish this sentence

Type into the fields and watch your positioning sentence assemble itself. Nothing here is collected or stored.

I help [PERSON] achieve [RESULT] without [OBSTACLE] by [METHOD / OFFER].

This doesn't need to become your final website headline. The exercise is simply designed to force clarity.

    The funnel

Okay. Now Let's Build the Funnel.

    1. 01

      Traffic

Someone discovers you through Google, social media, an ad, referral, email, etc.

    2. 02

      Landing Page

They arrive somewhere designed around a clear next step.

    3. 03

      Lead

They provide their contact information or otherwise identify themselves.

    4. 04

      Nurture

You continue the conversation instead of disappearing.

    5. 05

      Conversion

They take your intended action: book, buy, register, apply, etc.

Congratulations. You now understand what a marketing funnel is. 😂

Funnels CAN become extremely sophisticated. They don't always need to be.

    The fast-track funnel

Sometimes Simple Is Exactly What You Need

    1. 01

      Post or Ad

A clear message that attracts the right person's attention.

    2. 02

      Simple Landing Page

One promise, one clear idea and one primary action.

    3. 03

      Form

Only ask for information you actually need.

    4. 04

      Thank-You Page

Confirm what happened and explain what comes next.

    5. 05

      Follow-Up

Deliver what was promised and continue the conversation.

For a simple lead-generation campaign, this may be all you need to get started.

You don't need 47 workflows, nine pipelines and an enormous tech stack before you're allowed to launch something.

    Keep it simple

Launch small, then improve with real data.

A live, imperfect funnel teaches you more in two weeks than a perfect plan teaches you in two months. Start with five pieces, watch what happens, then add complexity only where the numbers ask for it.

    Lead magnets

Please Don't Just Make a Random PDF 😂

A good lead magnet should do two things:

    1. Give your potential customer a small but meaningful win.
    2. Attract someone who is likely to need what you sell next.

    Traffic

A Beautiful Funnel Isn't Very Useful If Nobody Sees It

    Organic

You earn the attention over time. Slower to build, cheaper to sustain.

    • Google
    • Social content
    • YouTube
    • Blog / content
    • SEO

    Paid

You buy the attention. Faster to test, stops when the budget stops.

    • Meta Ads
    • Google Ads
    • Other paid channels

    Existing Audience & Referrals

The attention you've already earned — and the cheapest growth you own.

    • Email list
    • Customers
    • Partners
    • Community
    • Word of mouth

So… Should I Just Turn On Facebook Ads?

    Maybe.

Paid traffic can help you reach the right people much faster, but ads aren't magic. Before spending money to send traffic into a funnel, you should understand your offer, audience, conversion path and what you'll measure.

Facebook Ads for Entrepreneurs: How Ads, Attribution & Metrics Actually Work

We'll translate CPM, CTR, CPC, CPL, ROAS, attribution, pixels and all those intimidating Ads Manager numbers into information you can actually use to make decisions.

    After the lead

Getting the Lead Isn't the Finish Line

    1. 01

      Form Submitted

Someone raises their hand and becomes a real opportunity.

    2. 02

      Confirmation

They immediately know it worked and what happens next.

    3. 03

      Nurture

Email or SMS keeps the conversation warm instead of silent.

    4. 04

      Follow-Up

A human (or a well-timed automation) reaches out with a next step.

    5. 05

      Appointment / Sale

The opportunity becomes a conversation, then a customer.

    6. 06

      Long-Term Relationship

Retention, referrals and repeat revenue live here.

One of the most common marketing mistakes is putting enormous effort into generating leads… and almost no thought into what happens after they arrive.

Email, SMS and simple follow-up rules matter because interest fades fast. Automation just makes sure the right message still goes out on the day you're too busy to send it. We'll go much deeper into that in the automation lesson.

    The question isn't only:

“How do I get more leads?”

    It's also:

“What happens to the leads I already have?”

    Measurement

You Don't Need 47 Metrics to Start Making Better Decisions

Every step in your marketing should have a measurable purpose. Here's what that looks like in practice:

    0

    Visitors

    0

    Leads

    10% visitor-to-lead conversion

    0

    Customers

    10% lead-to-customer conversion

    $0

    Revenue

Instead of staring at a giant dashboard and wondering whether green means good, start by asking:

    • How many people came?
    • How many became leads?
    • How many became customers?
    • How much revenue did those customers generate?
    • What did it cost me to get them?

You Don't Have to Know How to Do Everything.

But You Deserve to Understand What's Being Done for Your Business.

That's the reason I created this Marketing Hub.

You may never build your own funnel, configure an automation or manage an advertising campaign — and that's completely okay.

But when someone talks to you about your traffic, leads, conversion rate, CRM or ROAS, I want you to understand the conversation.

I want you to know what questions to ask.

Because good technology should empower your business, not make you feel like you need a translator just to understand it. 💜

And if you ever reach the point where you understand what needs to happen but would rather have someone help you build the strategy and technology behind it…

    That's exactly what I do.
